Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It often results from overuse, repetitive stress, or sudden increases in activity.

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Overuse: Running, jumping, or sudden increases in exercise intensity.

  • Improper footwear: Worn-out or unsupportive shoes.

  • Tight calf muscles: Increased strain on the tendon.

  • Bone spurs: Extra bone growth at the heel irritating the tendon.

  • Age & activity level: More common in athletes and middle-aged individuals.

Symptoms

  • Pain and stiffness in the back of the heel, especially in the morning.

  • Swelling and tenderness along the tendon.

  • Limited range of motion when flexing the foot.

  • Pain that worsens with activity.

Treatment Options

  • Rest & activity modification: Avoid high-impact activities.

  • Ice therapy: Apply ice packs to reduce swelling.

  • Compression & elevation: Helps manage inflammation.

  • Physical therapy: Stretching and strengthening exercises.

  • Orthotics & supportive footwear: Reduces strain on the tendon.

  • Medications: Anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.

  • Surgery: For severe cases or tendon rupture.

Prevention Tips

  • Gradually increase exercise intensity.

  • Stretch calf muscles regularly.

  • Wear proper footwear with arch support.

  • Avoid prolonged use of high heels.
